If you booked a flight from California to New York and they told you it would take 48 hours, you think they were nuts.  However, in 1929 the trip from coast to coast in the United States did take 48 hours and a variety of modes of transportation to accomplish.

The American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum has a new exhibit detailing the transcontinental adventure.  It's called "Coast to Coast in 48 Hours - Rail and Air".

"In the evening you had to take a train and then you got up the next day and hopped on a plane.  Then you flew a little while and you hopped off and took a train, so in 48 hours you finally made it to New York" said Angie Gofredo, Chief Development Officer with the C.R. Smith Museum.

They have model trains and planes set up, along with photos of the route and travelers of the day.

JD Ryan explores the original planes, trains & automobiles trip at the American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum.
