IRVING (105.3 The Fan) - No secret is being made at Valley Ranch about Ezekiel Elliott being considered by the Dallas Cowboys' choice with the fourth overall pick.
"He's worthy," Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said at Monday's pre-draft presser, "of being in the top-10 for sure."
You want him to be specific enough to day "top-four"? That would be unwise of Stephen to say. But it would be unwise of you to think otherwise.
The stellar Ohio State running back would add a "shiny toy" for owner Jerry Jones. But Elliott is more than that: even in an era when the running back is being devalued, Eliot might very well be the best player in the draft at any position. Besides, unlike a free-agent running back who might want to make $9 million per year, this year's fourth overall pick will make about $4 million a year – therefore "devalued" can still be a good value.
"Where we ultimately end up with him is still a work in progress," said Stephen, as the Cowboys are clearly also considering Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey. "(Elliott) obviously a very quality-type player and seems like he's pretty much universally looked at as a guy who deserves to be in that category."
The Cowboys have some level of faith in veteran signee Alfred Morris, in in last year's top rusher Darren McFadden and in the rehabbing and re-signed Lance Dunbar. So … isn't that, along with Tony Romo and Dez Bryant and this offensive line, enough weaponry?
"We'd like more," Jerry Jones said.
