Cowboys To Place Romo On IR/Designated To Return List

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Cowboys are placing Tony Romo on the IR/Designated-to-Return list, sources tell me, while prepping Brandon Weeden to be the two-month QB starter and contemplating the addition of street free agents like Christian Ponder and the practice-squad elevation of Kellen Moore.

Romo's broken collarbone, and the IR/DTR rules, mean he cannot practice for six weeks and can return to games no sooner than eight weeks. For Dallas, that means he'll miss seven games and be eligible to return on Nov. 22 in Miami.

So this is Weeden's team to "bus-drive'' for a time. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones tells 105.3 The Fan that Weeden is "a thing of beauty throwing the football.'' That's a bit hyperbolic, but he was a Browns No. 1 pick and the Cowboys had a second-round grade on him in his draft in part due to the Oklahoma State ex's arm strength.

Ponder, Matt Flynn, Josh Johnson and McLeod Bethel-Thompson are the four QBs getting Valley Ranch tryouts today; the scouting department views Ponder as having an inside track there.

Also available is Moore, a former Lions backup who hasn't played in an NFL game but who has the faith and trust of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who oversaw him in Detroit and now might push for him to be the No. 2 in Dallas.
