Cowboys To Look For QB In 'The Second Draft'

FRISCO (105.3 THE FAN) - Scouts (including our own Bryan Broaddus of 105.3 The Fan and DallasCowboys.com) like to call it "The Second Draft.''
It's the cut-down days waiver wires (due Aug. 30 and Sept. 3) when teams slice their rosters to 53, leaving on the street viable talent … and giving scouting departments a second crack at guys they liked or even missed on.
And the Cowboys could use some viable talent, especially at quarterback and defensive end.
The process started in a headline-grabbing way when on Monday the Browns cut QB Austin Davis and pass-rusher Paul Kruger.

Now, vested veterans don't have to go through waivers and are free to sign with new teams on their own. But the point is the same: Davis once had a nice game against Dallas while QB'ing the Rams; Kruger once had 11 sacks in a season.
Dallas will look to mine for value here at this two positions by also waiting on what happens to the QB situation in Kansas City (the Chiefs have five of them in camp so might be releasing rookie Kevin Hogan and young vet Aaron Murray.) The Broncos and Jets might have excess at QB, too. (And as much as some teams might've disliked a Mark Sanchez or a Geno Smith before, they might have to reconsider now.)
Before the Cowboys trade for a QB to backup Dak Prescott (the starter now that Tony Romo is temporarily sidelined), they will attempt to find help without giving up an asset via "The Second Draft.''
