GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Dallas Cowboys' pursuit of free-agent guard Brian Waters is "a dead deal,'' a source tells 105.3 The Fan, adding that "it looks like he just doesn't want to play football.''

Waters, 36, a six-time Pro Bowler who has been away from the game for over a year. Dallas was in discussions with him and with ex-Jets guard Brandon Moore. But both players have now declined invitations to join a club with injury woes at the position.

Cowboys play-by-play man Brad Sham of 105.3 The Fan was the first to report the story.

Dallas will be without probably starting left guard Ron Leary for at least two weeks after a knee scope on Friday. Incumbent starter Nate Livings (knee) will likely miss the rest of the preseason. Mackenzy Bernadeau missed the start of camp with a hamstring problem but is starting for the Cowboys in Arizona today at right guard. Struggling prospect David Arkin will start at left guard.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones this week that the level of "urgency'' regarding Waters hadn't changed even in the face of the team's injury woes.
