Cowboys Player Opens Breast Cancer Resource Center
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It can be difficult for a woman to adjust to living with breast cancer. But Dallas Cowboys linebacker Bradie James is trying to help out, by informing women and their families about the disease with a new resource center that bears his name.
James is known for blocking and tackling in the NFL, however, at this newly opened resource center, he is battling against breast cancer. "Our center here is the Bradie James Breast Cancer Resource Center. We try to extend and offer some resources to breast cancer patients and their family members," the center's cancer program director explained.
The center is located at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Oak Cliff. It provides assistance in fitting breast cancer patients with prosthetics, scarves, hats and wigs – all at no cost to the patient. The center's director said, "We have several different selections of wigs available here on-site. We are also able to provide them with scarf-tying techniques to kind of teach them how to find that look that best works."
The new center also has space for support group meetings, a computer for research and exercise videos and books to check out. "We have a computer here, available on-site," the center's director said. "There are many online resources, and we keep a list of those."
James lost his mother to breast cancer when he was in college. He started the Bradie James 'Foundation 56' in her honor. The foundation funded the center and a mobile mammography unit that will start serving women soon.
James is also a member of the team fighting breast cancer at Methodist Dallas Medical Center and in the community. "When patients are diagnosed with cancer, you know, it's so scary for them. If we have all the information here and you can connect them with people that can assist them, we want to be able to do that for them," the center's director said.
The center is staffed by volunteers with the American Cancer Society.
