Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Sells Stadium Naming Rights To AT&T

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Cowboys Stadium is no more.  The Cowboys have sold the name of their $1.2 Billion dollar stadium to AT&T.  It will now be called AT&T Stadium.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would not disclose the amount of the deal although some had predicted the naming rights could sell for up to $18 million a year.

"This is not the most ...in dollars that there have been in naming rights," Jones said.  "But this is the best naming rights relationship there is."

Jones said the stadium is a good fit with AT&T because both represent cutting edge technology. AT&T says it will enhance the stadium experience by adding wi-fi, creating new apps and making sporting events more interactive with fans.  There will, of course, be visible changes with signs around the stadium, but AT&T promises they'll be tasteful additions.

"Our objective is to integrate it seamlessly as if it had been there since the beginning," said Cathy Coughlin, AT&T Executive Vice President. "This is an amazing structure and we will honor that."

Jones said this is a partnership he envisioned while drawing up plans for the stadium.

"When we were thinking about as a family what we wanted this stadium to look like, I don't mind telling you AT&T was being put up in the corner," Jones said.

So,  Jones will get an undisclosed amount of money, the stadium gets a new name and the fans get ---- angry

"My opinion is AT&T is not worthy of putting their name on the stadium," said fan Lisa Gambel.

"I don't think we should disgrace the stadium, Cowboys Stadium, by putting someone else's name on it," said Gambel's husband John.

We spoke to fans from Texas, Colorado, New Jersey and even Panama who were visiting the stadium.  Not one preferred the new name.

"But this will grow on people," said Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck.  "People will know AT&T Stadium is Cowboys Stadium. I'm okay with it."

Arlington could make up to $500,000 a year as part of the renaming deal.
