Cowboys On FAs: No To Urlacher, Yes To Ronde?

IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones is confirming our March 13 story debunking the idea of a Dallas connection with Bears free-agent linebacker Brian Urlacher. Meanwhile, sources tell Fox Sports Southwest of three "name'' players who might actually be on the team's radar.

Dallas has interest in defensive back Ronde Barber (Bucs), receiver Laurent Robinson (Jaguars) and defensive back Michael Huff (Raiders).

But Urlacher? Jones confirms that the idea is not a match.

"You're talking about a Hall of Fame player here, an Urlacher,'' Jones tells the Chicago Tribune. "You don't ever dismiss Hall of Famers in my book. But obviously it'd be difficult. He plays what Sean (Lee, Dallas' starting middle linebacker) plays and to move everything around for a year doesn't really make a lot of sense. But at the same time you don't ever rule it out."

In fact, it is largely ruled out because in addition to the presence of Lee, the Cowboys don't have the financial room to be in on the Urlacher bidding.

Barber, Robinson and Huff, however, are "second-tier'' talents the club hopes might be available when "third-tier'' bidding starts. Only at that time – and possibly after they've successfully created new contracts for Tony Romo and Anthony Spencer (and maybe a change in the commitment to Doug Free) -- might the Cowboys be able to bid on free agents.

Other Dallas targets as second-tier free agents: tight end Kellen Davis (Bears), linebacker Chase Blackburn (Giants) and guard Matt Slauson (Jets).
