Cowboys Irving 'Scratching Surface' As NFC D Player of Week

FRISCO (105.3 The Fan) - David Irving likes to joke about how much Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli yells at him. But today? It's nothing but praise for the young Dallas defensive lineman, who has been named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Week.

What did Irving accomplish in Dallas' 30-16 win at Green Bay? All he did was record a sack, a pass deflection and three forced fumbles on the game. … And he did it all in just 19 snaps.

Irving had some competition for the honor, some of it likely coming from inside his own team, with Sean Lee and Barry Church also having outstanding games for the 5-1 Cowboys. But Irving — the first Dallas defensive end to win the honor since Charles Haley did it in 1995 — made history of a sort here: His three forced fumbles in a single game has only happened twice in the last 15 NFL seasons.

"I feel like we're scratching the surface,'' Irving said after the Green Bay game. "We all feel it. We're going to keep improving each week."

Irving, just a second-year UDFA who Dallas grabbed last year from the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad, is suddenly more than just "scratching the surface.''
