Cowboys end preseason with win over Miami
The Cowboys played their most inspired game of the preseason with most of the regulars standing on the sidelines without shoulder pads. But that shouldn't come as a surprise.
Coach Wade pares down his roster to 53 on Saturday, so the dregs of the roster fought for their professional lives in a 27-25 victory over the Dolphins.
There may still be questions about how many receivers or linemen the Cowboys keep (and if that receiving corps includes Patrick Crayton after his agent Fred Lyles said late Thursday he plans to ask the team to release his client), but at least they don't have to worry about their kicker.
David Buehler boomed in field goals from 51, 45, 40, and 31 yards. The last one won the game as time expired.
"He was phenomenal," said receiver Sam Hurd, who helped his own cause with a 43-yard touchdown catch to go with his usual stellar special teams play. "But he's been that way. The media just writes to write because to ever doubt that Buehler could do it was crazy. "And he did at USC, so he's been that way. He's been good. We just had [Nick] Folk here, so now he gets his chance and he's showing what he can do."
Hopefully that's the last time the names Buehler and Folk are ever used in the same sentence. Folk came down with a bad case of the yips that ended his Cowboys career. Buehler showed off his leg last year as the kickoff specialist, and now he's flashed the accuracy needed to be a full-time placekicker.
"It's definitely a confidence booster," Buehler said. "I'm glad I could have a game like this. All you guys [media] were saying, 'You're just kicking PATs the last two games.' So it was good to have a lot of field goals, a lot of attempts, and a lot of makes."
