Cowboys Josh Brent Arrested On Intoxication Manslaughter Charges
IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent has been arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter stemming from a late night crash that resulted in the death of a teammate.
Irving Police report that Jerry Brown Jr., a 25-year old currently on the Cowboys' practice roster, was killed in the accident.
Early in the morning on Saturday, around 2:21 a.m., Brent was driving a 2007 Mercedes westbound in the 1400 block of the service road of SH-114 when his vehicle hit a curb and flipped at least one time before coming to rest in the middle of the service road.
Inside The Cowboys' Reaction to the Brown/Brent Tragedy
When police arrived, Brent was seen dragging Brown from the vehicle, according to John Argumaniz, the Public Information Officer with the Irving Police Department.
Brent was responsive and able to speak with officers. Brown was unresponsive and transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to a statement from the Irving Police Department, "Officers at the scene believed alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash; therefore, Price-Brent was asked to perform field sobriety tests."
Based on the results and the officer's judgement, Brent was arrested for driving while intoxicated.
He was transferred to a local hospital for treatment of minor scrapes and for routine blood testing. He was then booked into the Irving City jail. No bond has been set and the investigation is still ongoing.
Brent has appeared in 12 games for the Cowboys this season and has recorded 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks. CBS 11's Bill Jones reports that Brent was previously arrested in 2009 for driving under the influence while at the University of Illinois.
Brown was signed to the practice squad in October.
The two were teammates at the University of Illinois.
The team issued a statement from owner and general manager Jerry Jones:
"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."
