Cowboys At QB: Keeping Dak Over Zack

FRISCO (105.3 THE FAN) - The Dallas Cowboys weren't especially enamored with LSU quarterback Zack Mettenberger in his 2014 draft year, and now that he's available following being released by the Tennessee Titans on Monday, the Cowboys' opinion hasn't much changed.

There will be no "hot pursuit'' of the player who was selected in the sixth round of that draft by a Titans team that is choosing to keep two former Dallas QBs, Matt Cassel and Alex Tanney, over him (in addition to young starter Marcus Mariota).

Dallas is No. 4 in the waiver-order list (mirroring the recent draft order) but isn't biting despite the fact that Mettenberger has 10 starts in the NFL — albeit with 10 losses.

This shouldn't be necessarily read as a vote of confidence for No. 2 QB Kellen Moore; the Cowboys will keep an eye out all summer for other cheap solutions behind starter Tony Romo. But a lack of interest in Mettenberger — who probably had a sixth- or seventh-round grade from Dallas as a college player — should be taken as a sign that the Cowboys have their "young prospect to develop'' in  rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott, who will be the No. 3 QB here ahead of another youngster, Jameill Showers.
