Cowboys Absentees Dez Bryant, Orlando Scandrick Talk To The Fan

IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - Monday marks Day 1 of the Cowboys off-season workout program - which is voluntary. The fact Dez Bryant hasn't yet signed his franchise-tag contract justifies his absence. But Orlando Scandrick isn't there, either and both players are visiting with 105.3 The Fan about what's going on.
105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher spoke to Scandrick today, who said "No'' to my question about long-term plans to skip workouts. But the team's top cornerback added, "I have no comment for you there'' when I asked him about logical speculation that his absence has to do with a desire to re-negotiate a contract that guaranteed him $9 million but pays him just $1.5 million this year -- and can cause him to lose a third of that if he doesn't participate in 90 percent of offseason work.
So let the logical speculation continue.
Dallas is in a bit of a pinch at cornerback, as the club isn't comfortable paying Brandon Carr his $8 mil and can't be sure Mo Claiborne will be healthy enough to earn his $2.6 million base salary.
The Cowboys have a opportunity to select a first-team-ready corner with the 27th overall pick (with Byron Jones, Kevin Johnson, Jalen Collins and Marcus Peters among the candidates) but tossed into this mix is the rumor that if Minnesota really does dangle Adrian Peterson in trade, they'll want a first-rounder and top-notch corner in return.
Scandrick is "top-notch'' and maybe he's covered by teams other than the Vikings, too - further muddying what might be going on here.

Meanwhile, The Fan also spoke to Dez Bryant in recent days, and he called the idea that his change in advisers will negatively impact his chance of getting a "Cowboys For Life'' contract "laughable.''
"I'm the one making the decisions on who to trust and who to be surrounded by,'' Bryant told me in an exclusive interview. "I've surrounded myself with people who I think deserve to be trusted. ... The rest of this (story) is just more bull----.''
