DALLAS (CBS11 SPORTS) - Cowboys defensive lineman David Irving says he wishes he could do more, but he's lending his time and name to help stop a crisis in Dallas.

Dallas Animal Services says it is receiving up to 800 unwanted or lost pets a week; numbers that are much higher than normal.

While the shelter normally houses just 600 pets, they are having to find space for the new intakes. In several cases, those that can no longer be cared for, are having to be euthanized.

Second-year player David Irving says he just wants to help as many dogs and cats as he can find quality homes.

"I would take all of them home if I could," said Irving.

Irving is encouraging people in DFW to join his team and help tackle the cause. By using the phrase "David Irving sent me," Dallas Animal Services will waive all adoption fees.

The hope is this serves as motivation for people to step up and answer the call. In addition, every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Dallas Animal Services is offering low cost vaccination clinics to help families care for their pets before feeling the need to turn them in.
