Construction "Obstacle Course" Outside Fort Worth School

FORT WORTH (CBS 11 NEWS) - The sounds of construction have quickly been replaced with the sounds of frustration. In south Fort Worth the first week of school is a big mess.

Road construction west and north of Daggett Middle School is creating a lot of chaos for students and parents.

"For me to get here I have to go all the way around like two blocks or three blocks," parent Sanjuanita Lopez explained, adding, "...and turn back and then drop my kids or pick them up."

The roads around the school are torn up. There's exposed rebar, no sidewalks and no easy way to get around.

"Didn't know where to park or where to go so it was pretty rough," Desiree De La Cruz said. "It was to the point where it was hard to find our children when they were let out."

According to city officials, crews are working on water and sewer improvements. The project should have already been wrapped up, but now it might last until October. Officials explained that whiel the project is very big it has taken longer than expected.

What's even more frustrating to some parents is that there's more work to be done at nearby Daggett Montessori and Daggett Elementary.

Jasmin Flores lives near the construction. "The kids just kind of walk around it. I've kind of rolled my ankle a couple of times, like going getting into my car if I park on the side of the road. I can imagine it's not good for them [children] either."

There are reportedly different phases to the project. Some roads could be open and the work could be complete in a few weeks, however other's could take a longer.
