Construction Crews Mistakenly Cut Down Trees

MCKINNEY (CBSDFW.COM) - The thick strand of trees behind her house was one of the best points about her home for McKinney resident Nikki Henderson. It was a buffer between their neighborhood and the busy Hardin Blvd. about 100 yards away.

"You wouldn't see any cars," Henderson said. "You wouldn't see any power lines. It was a beautiful canopy of 40 and 50 foot trees."

But the McKinney homeowner said it's now nothing more than a gaping hole that can't be fixed. Nikki Henderson cried when she saw the lush trees behind her home being ripped down by a construction crew. Cell phone video captured by her neighbor shows a bulldozer knocking over towering trees.

"Our property values will be affected, resale will be affected," Henderson lamented. "This isn't life-threatening, but it's sad! It's sad that these trees were cut down by mistake!"

Or as a McKinney spokesperson called it, a really awful mistake. The city said it's working with the contractor to figure out how a small easement that was supposed to be widened next to a wall became a massive pile of lumber, ruining the views and sound barrier for homeowners.

"I know there are bigger problems in the world," Henderson said nearly in tears. "But this was a beautiful piece of McKinney you drove through and you saw this canopy of trees. McKinney, our motto? Unique by nature. You know? Number one city to live in says Money magazine. I don't feel that way right now when you go and cut our trees down."

A McKinney spokesperson said there will be mitigation but just what that might be is unclear at this point.
