Conservatives Shift Focus To Texas Senate Race
AUSTIN (AP) – The conservative activist group Club for Growth is shifting its focus to Texas after a big victory defeating incumbent Indiana Senator Richard Lugar.
The organization has supported former Texas Solicitor General Ted Cruz for months against front-runner Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, including running anti-Dewhurst cable television ads. But fresh off a victory supporting a conservative, tea party candidate against Lugar, the group says it will focus on the Texas race.
Club for Growth President Chris Chocola said Wednesday that Dewhurst is too moderate and announced an additional $1 million television ad campaign to defeat him.
Dewhurst has rejected charges that he has been a moderate since becoming lieutenant governor in 2003. He has maintained Republican orthodoxy by reducing per capita taxation while presiding over the Texas Senate.
