Concerns Over Horse Carriages In Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK (CBS11) - There's a holiday horse carriage controversy brewing in Highland Park after a resident reported a carriage driver struck his vehicle and did not stop to report the incident.
Highland Park Police are investigating the situation.
Residents in the area feel the bigger problem is how narrow some of the road are that the carriages rumble down during Christmas.
"For me personally living in the neighborhood, they're a nuisance," said Jill Tananbaum, a resident in Highland Park.
Tananbaum has a front-row seat to the holiday carriages. When she heard about her neighbors car allegedly being side-swiped by a carriage driver, it did not surprise her.
"It was inevitable," said Tananbaum.
The problem Tananbaum said is the road. Many people park along the curb, there is constant traffic and the carriages barely squeeze by the mess.
"It's a recipe for disaster," said Tananbaum.
The carriage company looking into the incident said it is in contact with the owner of the car. If its driver did anything wrong, the company wants to make it right.
"Well it doesn't last forever. Three more weeks and we're going to wrap it up. Christmas will be over," said Kevin Rush, a Highland Park resident.
The horses rumble right past Rush's home and he love the carriages. But he feels of there is a safety issue, it needs to be taken care of to keep the tradition rolling along.
"To me it's what makes Christmas in Highland Park all that more special," said Rush.
The owner of the carriage company looking into the incident said he is instructing his drivers to stay away from the particular road the incident happened on until the situation is resolved.
