GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - A neighborhood in Garland laid a wreath at the spot where a police officer was killed nearly 18 years ago.

Today is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and the culmination of Blue Light Alert. Citizens were encouraged to show their support of law enforcement by placing a blue light bulb on their front porch.

Ofc. David Moore was shot multiple times by a bank robber. Residents in the area said they have never forgotten him.

Arlene Johnson with The New World crime watch group presented the wreath and told about 20 police officers present that their work in the community is appreciated.

"We support you. We pray for your every day safety" said Johnson.

Sheila Moore, the widow of officer Moore, said losing her husband is still difficult especially every new year. "It's the end of another year without him. And the start of another year without him" she said.

The ceremony was performed at the window where Officer Moore was killed.

Garland police said the slain officer pushed the suspect through the bank window to protect other people inside.

Officer Joe Harn was assigned to lead the Internal Affairs investigation of the shooting and he explains how the gunman shot Officer Moore. "David grabbed him, pushed him through the glass, onto that little porch area, went to the ground and that's where he stood over David and shot him several times."

Officer Moore was shot multiple times. No one else was injured.

Kenneth Mosley was arrested that day, February 15, 1997. He was convicted of fatally shooting Officer Moore. Mosley was sentenced to the death penalty and Mrs. Moore witnessed his execution in 2010.

Other officers who worked with Moore say they appreciate the support shown today.

"To have citizens come out and show support for us it's unbelievable" said Garland Police Officer Robert Duncan. "Can't even say how much it means to us, for Ofc. Moore and his family."
