Aubrey (CBSDFW.COM) — The town of Aubrey is showing the power of community by coming together to help one of their own.

Single mother, Lisa Nelson has cared for her 28-year-old daughter Kami who's battling an aggressive form of cancer in her spine and brain.

The mother and daughter duo from Aubrey are well-known in their community for their philanthropic and charitable work. But now they are the ones who needed a hand up.

The roof of their home has fallen into disrepair. Nelson hasn't had the money or time to make the fix, which is where her neighbors stepped in.

Thanks to Wilson Roofing company and the donations of other Aubrey residents the Nelsons are having a brand new roof installed at no charge.

"It means everything in the world to me. These people in this town, and the Wilson's, and the people that are sponsoring them... it just means so much to me that I don't have to worry about this while we are in the hospital," said Nelson.

Darlene Wilson from Wilson roofing explained why they decided to help the family.

"There's nobody who deserves it more than Lisa. Her and Kami have done so much for the community. Even now that Kami is in the hospital she is having a toy and gift drive for young children who are in the hospital for Christmas."

Community members who helped make it all happen say they will continue to rally behind the family as Kami's battle moves forward.
