Committee Eyes Changing USPS Door-To-Door Mail Delivery
WASHINGTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - The U.S. Postal Service wants to end door-to-door delivery for new homes in favor of curbside service and neighborhood cluster boxes.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is considering legislation that would take that one step further, phasing out door-to-door delivery for nearly all Americans.
The proposal is part of a broad reform effort designed to cut costs at the cash-strapped agency by up to $4.5 billion a year. The Postal Service had a $16 billion loss last year. Since 2006, the USPS has reduced annual costs by some $15 billion, cut its workforce by nearly 200,000 and consolidated more than 200 mail-processing locations -- including some here in North Texas.
In a change the Postal Service began in April, people moving into newly built homes will receive curbside or neighborhood cluster box service.
