Collin County Taxes Sent To New Mexico By Mistake
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - A printing error could leave some 2,500 Collin County residents with a big tax headache. These residents received their property tax bills, but with the wrong information.
Rex White recently received his Collin County property tax bill. The amount due was correct, but the return envelope for sending in his payment had a glaring error. The address of the Dona Ana County Treasurer in New Mexico was printed front and center on the payment envelope. "How many people look at the return address?" wondered White.
If he had not bothered to look, the Plano resident would have surely mailed his tax payment to New Mexico. So, White called the Collin County Tax Assessor's Office to warn them about the mistake. "What happens if an elderly couple gets this? Let's say they send it in on January 30," White said. "Their taxes would actually be delinquent."
White was not the only resident who noticed the mistake. The Collin County tax office is receiving several calls each day from taxpayers complaining that their payment envelopes have a New Mexico address.
Collin County Tax Assessor and Collector Kenneth Maun explained that the envelope error was made by an outside printing service. "The printer did an inventory and found they were one case short of New Mexico tax office envelopes," Maun said.
Collin County recently sent out a letter that explains the foul up, along with correct payment envelopes, to the 2,500 taxpayers. But Dona Ana County Treasurer David Gutierrez said that he has already received 15 property tax payments from Collin County residents. His office is collecting the Collin County envelopes to send back to North Texas.
Texas residents have until January 31 to pay their property taxes before incurring penalties.
