Colleyville Finds Mosquito With West Nile
COLLEYVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - Don't forget the bug spray when you head outdoors this summer. The West Nile threat is real, and DFW communities are taking steps to help keep you and your family safe. We are in the midst of mosquito season and, while the insects may seem to be fewer in number, people are still feeling the bite.
There has already been one human case of West Nile found in a Travis County man. Fortunately, there have been no cases in Tarrant County or Dallas County. But at Sparger Park in Colleyville, one of the regular mosquito samplings tested positive for the virus. The area has been treated with larvacide, and health officials will continue those treatments.
There have been no confirmed cases of West Nile in Hurst, but the city began fogging earlier this week, in order to help prevent mosquitos from multiplying. Other area cities, including Dallas, are also taking a proactive approach, spraying targeted areas before they become a problem.
"We're doing it as a pre-emptive measure, to try to make sure we don't lose the ground," said Jimmy Martin with Dallas Code Compliance.
Officials in Colleyville said that it is imperative that residents take steps on their own, as well, to protect themselves from mosquitos bites.
Ross Lind of Dallas had the virus two years ago, and still struggles with low energy. He is glad to hear that Dallas crews are spraying around his neighborhood. "I wouldn't want anyone in my neighborhood hurt with this," Lind said. "This is a terrible, debilitating disease."
A man from Cleburne thinks that he contracted West Nile in Tarrant County, but that has not been confirmed. Still, he is undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Braunfels.
