College Football Opening Weekend 2012: My Top 10 CBS Contemplations

10. Best players I watched last weekend: Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell and Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray. Put them on your Heisman radar right now.

9. This will come as no surprise to the folks in Austin, but Garrett Gilbert sucks. He had a dropped TD that helped ignite the rout at Baylor, but he missed open receivers all night for SMU.

8. So much for missing Honey Badger. I looked up and there was Odell Beckham, returning a punt 70 yards for a touchdown against North Texas.

7. What the what? OU was tied 7-7 at the half at UTEP. Won only by 17.

6. Oregon hung 50 on Arkansas State. In the first half. And if you're attempting to keep up with the Ducks' ever-changing color wheel, their helmets were yellow, accented with mirrored, chrome wings. I'm not making that up.

5. Yes, he's corny. But I love me some Brent Musburger calling a college football game.

4. Was excited to see former Aledo star running back Jonathan Gray make his debut for Texas. But he got only 5 carries for 9 yards in an underwhelming 37-17 win over Wyoming. Joe Bergeron and Malcolm Brown got the bulk of the carries (a combined 29).

3. Oklahoma State paid Savannah State $385,000 to be the opponent in its home opener, then beat them 84-0. Worth it? And, sure enough, the Cowboys covered the largest betting spread in college football history: 67.5 points.

2. To no one's surprise – except boxer Floyd Mayweather, who bet $2.9 million on Michigan +13 – Alabama embarrassed the Wolverines, 41-14, at Cowboys Stadium. Denard Robinson threw 2 interceptions and was held to only 26 yards rushing.

1. Biggest upset of the weekend happened right here in the Lone Star State. Texas State, a 34.5-point underdog at Houston, whipped the Cougars, 30-13. A $100 bet on the Bobcats would have netted you a cool $11,550. Didn't think UH would miss Case Keenum that much. The humiliating loss cost offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt his job. Yes already.
