City Of Grand Prairie Declares Water Emergency
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - Officials with the utility department in the City of Grand Prairie have declared a state of emergency.
A major water main break has left the city asking residents to "severely curtail" their water usage for at least the next 24 hours and that means completely eliminating outdoor watering.
The need to discontinue outdoor watering is of particular concern because, as Public Works director Ron McCuller explained, "Mondays and Tuesdays are usually big lawn watering days for residents who are not allowed to water Saturday and Sunday under our water restrictions."
One of two main water supply lines running from Dallas into Grand Prairie has ruptured. The broken line, near the Carrier Parkway and Camp Wisdom Road area, is the largest in the city. This is a 60-inch concrete line, McCuller said.
While all city water wells have been activated, officials say that will not produce enough water to return supplies to normal.
Grand Prairie residents are being asked to only use water for essential purposes. McCuller said, "In order to have enough water for drinking, emergency response and personal hygiene, it is critical Grand Prairie residents curtail outdoor watering and nonessential use of water until this line is repaired and back in service."
City crews are out now and will work around the clock until the line is repaired. City officials have an estimated repair time of at least 24 hours.
