Church-Led Job Fair Meeting At Frisco Bar
FRISCO (CBSDFW.COM) - You wouldn't call it your typical job fair. This one was held at a Frisco Sports Bar. That's right. People looking for jobs met with recruiters looking to hire them.
The idea for it came from a local church. One Community Church in Frisco started helping job seekers with their resumes and presentation skills. Then, they decided to put the job seekers together with the actual recruiters.
"We were here one time at a sports event and saw people here. Some were out of work. We thought why not have a job fair here?" Victor Miller said.
Miller knows what it's like to be unemployed. He's been there himself.
Arissa Ruffin is looking for work in the field of Human Resources. A bar isn't exactly the place where she thought she'd ever go for a job fair, especially one put on by a church. "I was like okay. THAT's different," she said.
But she went thinking it would be a lot less stressful. "I can just let my guard down and just have a conversation with someone instead of just trying to sell myself with a speech that I've kind of worked on in the back of my head," she said with a laugh.
Recruiters say it works for them too. "I'm always looking for talent," said Dean Jones.
Jones is a financial and IT recruiter. "I think it helps. Because people are relaxed. You see them in their natural state," he said.
He brought two friends who needed jobs to the last job fair held in a bar. "They were actually able to find jobs coming to this event. And, I couldn't believe the success rate, because I'm batting two for two," he said with a laugh.
Victor Miller says he holds the job fairs in a bar once every quarter. He says the information for them can be found on meetup.com, look for the Job Seekers Support Group of Collin County.
One Community Church helps people with their resumes every third Wednesday.
