Christmas Donations Down Despite Increase In Need

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Seven-year-old Carolina Flores is trying to get on Santa's good side.

"Santa's nice, and I don't want to get on the naughty list," she said.

Christmas, though, is a hard task for her mother to pull off, when she's struggling just to pay the rent.

"There are times…yes, it's difficult," said Maria Flores.

It's because of families, like the Flores', that Carol Brown helped found Cowboy Santas 30 years ago.

"I have a really soft spot in my heart for kids," she said.

This year, though, the need is greater than ever, and the shelves are already empty.

"There's nothing," Brown said as she walked through her warehouse.

The Fort Worth organization, though, has about 2,000 families still waiting for presents.

"We need help desperately. We've got to get help," Brown said.

Fortunately, for the Flores family, there was still enough Saturday morning to fill a bag with gifts for Carolina and her little brother.

"I know they're going to like them," said Maria.

To donate to Cowboy Santas, you can drop off new toys at any fire or police station in Fort Worth.

The organization also accepts monetary donations, which it can use to buy deeply discounted toys direct from their manufacturers.
