GARLAND (CBSDFW.COM) - Hours after a deadly crash in Garland took the life of a woman and a 4-year-old child and left another toddler in critical condition, police say they still have more questions than answers.

The chain-reaction crash happened just after 11 p.m. Wednesday on LBJ Freeway near La Prada Drive.

Police say the accident happened after a white Ford Mustang, that witnesses said had been driving erratically, suddenly stopped in the middle of the freeway. One vehicle, an SUV was able to stop behind the sports car, but another car, a Saturn, apparently couldn't stop and hit the SUV from behind. That car was then hit, too, by a white Dodge.

Sandwiched in the middle of the pileup, in the Saturn, were two adults and two children.

An adult woman and a 4-year-old girl died from their injuries. The adult man and a 3-year-old child suffered severe injuries. But right now police still do not know the identities of any of the dead or injured. The adults had no identification and the car was so badly mangled investigators are struggling to find clues about who the people are.

Garland police Lieutenant Pedro Barineau said, "It appears that it was a whole family involved… an adult male, adult female and two children. Unfortunately, we don't have their identity at this point and time. So any assistance from the public… if they have any information about people involved or the whereabouts of someone who was supposed to be at a certain destination please contact the Garland Police Department."

In addition to the victim identities, it's also a mystery as to who was driving and riding in the Mustang. Witnesses told police that after the crash two people got out of the car and fled the scene on foot. Those individuals are  still at large.

Police were also told a fifth vehicle may have been clipped in the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash, identity of the victims or the people who ran from the scene is asked to call Garland Crime Stoppers at 972-272-8477.
