Child Who Shot Himself To Make Full Recovery

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A three-year-old Dallas boy is expected to make a full recovery after shooting himself Tuesday evening.

Cody Holmes was visiting his grandfather's house in North Dallas, when his mother said he came to the bedroom where she was changing her other child's diaper.

Britney Holmes said she had just taken her eye off him for a second when the three-year-old found a loaded gun under a pillow.

"We didn't even know that the gun was there," she said.

Cody Holmes was shot in the shoulder and was rushed to Children's Medical Center where Thursday night he remained in intensive care.

The boy's father, Cody Holmes Sr., said he is thankful his son is alive and said no one is to blame.

"Accidents happen" he said. "It was a complete accident."

Cody Holmes is the fourth North Texas child to be accidentally shot this year.

Firearm instructor Joe Matyus of Frisco said all families, even those who don't own a gun, should talk about gun safety.

"Like guns, love guns, hate guns - I respect all those positions," said Matyus. "What I respect even more is parent's willingness to keep their child safe through educating them and not ignoring the fact that firearms are a part of everyday society."

Matyus is an instructor and the owner of CHL Concealed Carry. Along with CHL classes, he offers a gun safety class for the whole family.

"Accidents happen," he said. "But you can take steps to protect your children."
