Child Struck And Killed In Shopping Center Driveway In Carrollton; Second Child Hospitalized
CARROLLTON, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) - Carrolton Police confirm a 12-year-old boy was struck and killed by a van Monday afternoon.
A 7-year-old relative was also struck and and taken to the hospital with injuries that are not serious.
It happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. on South Josey Lane at Crosby while the children and the mother of the 12-year-old were approaching a driveway in front of a shopping center.
Police said they were walking on the sidewalk and about to cross the driveway when the driver turned to enter the driveway and hit the children.
The mother was not struck.
The child who died has been identified as Victor Garcia.
Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD tweeted, "It is with great sadness that we share that Dewitt Perry Middle School student Victor Garcia passed away today. Please keep the family, friends & Perry MS community in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."
Police said in a tweet, the driver stopped and is cooperating with the investigation.
The driver told investigators he swerved to avoid another vehicle that had stopped unexpectedly in front of him.
In addition to a full investigation, the Carrollton Police Department said it is working to provide any and all available resources to the victim's family.
Garcia's family has set up a GoFundMe account to help the family with immediate needs and funeral expenses.
