Child Not Hurt In North Texas Police Chase

TERRELL (CBSDFW.COM) - A high-speed car chase through North Texas on Monday ended in a crash and gunfire. The Texas Rangers have taken over an investigation into the two-hour chase that involved state troopers, and saw a dramatic conclusion just north of Highway 80 near Terrell.

The chase started around 2:00 p.m. Monday in Greenville. Authorities then followed the suspect north into Commerce before he turned around and drove into Kaufman County. Officers tried to release road spikes twice, but the driver swerved both times, attempting to run over the officers.

The suspected driver was later identified as 35-year-old Steven Capps of Caddo Mills. Police watched him driving well over the speed limit along Interstate-30 in Hunt County, said Corporal Robert White with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The car belongs to a woman in Greenville, but it is not known if she had any connection to Capps.

After the suspect's second attempt to strike an officer who was standing along the side of the road, the car crashed. State troopers then fired several shots at the car. One of those shots hit Capps in the abdomen.

Capps was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas in critical condition. Hospital officials have not released an update on his status. DPS officials said that they are analyzing drugs that were found on the suspect to see if they are illegal substances. White said that Capps may have started running from police because of the drugs in the car.

After the shooting, officers later discovered that Capps had his son belted into a booster seat in the car. It was first believed that the child was grazed by a bullet during the shooting, but that was later determined to be false. The boy was taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, but only to be checked out. He was not injured. The age of the child is not known.
