Chiefs Of 5 Public Colleges Paid More Than $1M, Study Finds

BOSTON (AP) -- Pay is going up for public college presidents, and more of them are passing the $1 million mark.
An annual survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education found that the median total pay for public university presidents reached $431,000 in the 2015 fiscal year, up 4.3 percent over a year before. It also found that five presidents received more than $1 million, up from two the year before.
The University of Houston's chief topped the list at $1.3 million, followed by leaders at the University of Oregon, Texas A&M University, the University of Texas system and Georgia State University.
The survey tallied base salaries and other pay, such as bonuses.
Public university presidents typically earn less than their peers at private colleges, whose pay is ranked separately by The Chronicle.
