Chick-fil-A "Kiss-In" Protest A Social Media Event
NORTH DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS)- Wednesday there were so many supporters for Chick-fil-A appreciation day at the restaurant on the 7700 Block of North Centeral Expressway, they ran out of food.
Protesters held a "same sex kiss in" outside the same restaurant Friday night. Only about a dozen showed up. But they got their message across.
A kiss wasn't just a kiss at Chick-Fil-A Friday night. Gay rights activists made it a symbol.
"We need everyone to know our community really supports each other and we're not just talk, we're action," Dan Schmoker said.
The National Same Sex Kiss In asked members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender community to show up at Chick-Fil-A restaurants in North Texas and across the country and take pictures of each other in lip locks.
The Kiss In was also designed as a social media event.
"We have Facebook pages developed for this. We have a Tumblr page," Dan Schmoker said.
The Kiss In takes place days after thousands showed their support for Chick-Fil-A.
But the idea for the Kiss In emerged a few months ago from the mind of Carly McGehee.
"It was a couple of days after Dan Cathy announced his views on LGBT rights," said
Carly McGehee.
McGehee, a Flower Mound Native now living in New York, is back in North Texas on personal matters but stopped by the Chick-Fil-A on the 77-hundred block of North Central Avenue to
lend her support.
"It had been something I'd just talked to my friends. 'Hey, wouldn't it be really funny if, really awesome if we got a bunch of people together to stick it to the man?'" she said.
McGehee didn't come out until she graduated from Liberty Christian High School. She remembers being miserable there.
"I was told on a regular basis that gay people were going to hell," she said.
"I went through a long period of depression and unhappiness," she remembers.
McGehee renounced her Christian upbringing and became agnostic for a while. Now, she's Buddhist.
"We disagree with their opinion. But we still love them as people," said Dr. Thomas White.
Dr. White is the Vice President of Student Services at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He says their university bought 250 sandwiches on Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day.
Dr. White says he agrees with gay activists freedom to express themselves but does not agree with their sin.
"We disagree with same sex marriage but we believe Jesus died on the cross for everyone's sins. So it's not just same sex marriage we think its wrong. It's the sex trade, it's pornography, it's adultery," Dr. White said.
Both sides say they stand for love. But there are haters. Chick-Fil-A's website was hacked Friday and fake tweets from Chick-Fil-A were also sent out belittling the protesters.
