Central Texas High Schools Diverge Over 'Dixie'

AUSTIN (AP) - For two Central Texas school districts, football games have forced a discussion about whether to play a song that's part of a long Southern tradition: Dixie.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Travis High School in Austin replaced "Dixie" with another song, "Travis Fight." But Hays High School in Buda, south of Austin, is keeping the song for now.

At Hays -- where the players are called the "Rebels" -- debate over the Confederate anthem comes after an incident in which two students were accused of writing racial slurs and urinating on the door of a black teacher's classroom.

An Austin schools spokesman says Travis teachers and others talked about changing the school's fight song for a year.

The Confederate anthem represents the Old South for many people.
