Cattle Truck Crash Snarls Fort Worth Traffic
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - An overturned cattle truck created a traffic mess near downtown Fort Worth on Wednesday morning, as authorities worked to rescue the trapped livestock. The crash took place around 4:00 a.m. along the ramp from U.S. Highway 287 heading onto northbound Interstate-35W. Crews were still trying to clear the roadway at midday. Authorities expected the freeway to open by 2 pm at the earliest.
Members from the Fort Worth Police Department, the Fort Worth Fire Department and the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office all assisted in the big rescue operation.
Officials had to use the jaws of life, a plasma torch and a wench to pry the back off of the overturned truck. This gave rescuers access to the hurt cattle. Animals were then herded, one at a time, into a makeshift pen before being led onto another trailer. There were around 100 cows in all.
Crews said that around 10 to 20 percent of the cattle on the truck did not survive the crash. Several others suffered injuries. However, no people were hurt during this incident.
Additional workers were called to the scene to assist in cleaning up the mess. Authorities have not said what may have caused the cattle truck to crash.
