Catholic Leaders Respond To Gov. Perry's Immigration Proposal
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Leaders from The Catholic Diocese of Dallas and Fort Worth have responded to Governor Perry's plan to send National Guard troops to the border. Both organizations are directly tied to assistance efforts for unaccompanied immigrant children.
Chief Shepherd of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas, Bishop Kevin Farrell outlined their outreach and assistance plans for the 2,000 immigrant children set to arrive in the city by month's end.
"I make no judgment on whether it's a good thing or bad thing. I do say it doesn't help resolve the issue or the problem of the moment. And that's what we need to focus on. And that's what we're focused on the issue of the moment," said Bishop Farrell.
Catholic Charities said they welcome volunteers to help with food and clothing support for children, but also legal assistance. Both Fort Worth and Dallas Diocese leaders said Monday they wish to sidestep the political debate surrounding the child immigrant issue.
The Dallas Diocese represents 1.2 million Catholics in a 9 county area. More than 100 lawyers have volunteered their legal services for the unaccompanied minors.
