Catholic Charities Expects To Help 27,000 On Immigration

Catholic Charities of Dallas estimates that about 27,000 people will seek the nonprofit's help following sweeping changes to the U.S. immigration system that could shield millions of people from deportation.

Officials at the organization that assists immigrants said on Friday that they welcomed the changes announced by President Barack Obama the night before.

Arne Nelson, president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit, says they daily "see firsthand the impact of our broken immigration system." He says, "We firmly believed our nation could no longer wait for action while so many families are torn apart."

Vanna Slaughter, director of immigration for the group, says they've waited for such action "for so very, very long."
