Carjacking Suspect Shot By Police In Mesquite
MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - A 19-year-old carjacking suspect was shot by police in Mesquite early Wednesday morning following a short chase.
It all began around 12:40 a.m. when the victim reported that two black males bearing handguns had forcibly taken his silver Acura sedan and wallet. Mesquite Police observed the stolen vehicle and attempted to perform a traffic stop.
The stolen vehicle then fled before stopping in the 3600 block of Bahamas Street near Range Elementary School. One suspect, identified as Deshon Jackson, was taken into custody. The other suspect, Demarcus Shorter, ran toward a nearby house with his hands at his waistband.
After jumping a fence into a backyard, Shorter reportedly stopped suddenly, turning toward the officer and raising his hands. The officer then fired, striking Shorter.
Police told CBS 11 News that a total of three shots were fired by the Mesquite officer.
"The officer was placed in fear of his life and discharged his service revolver three times, shooting him once in the back," explained Sgt. Brian Parrish with the Mesquite Police Department.
The suspect was taken to Baylor Hospital and is said to be stable. Police say guns were found at the scene.
Police say Shorter was not armed, but was still considered a threat.
An accomplice, Keith Simon, who was following in a car close behind, was also arrested.
All three suspects are being charged with aggravated robbery in this case and are now under investigation for a series of robberies.
As a matter of protocol, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative assignment while the case is investigated. The victim of the carjacking and responding officers were not injured during the incident.
