Caring 2nd Grader Collecting Toys For Sick Kids
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A young man from Carrollton has taken on Christmas with a heart for other children who are in the hospital. The act comes after his firsthand experience.
Micah Pinson knows what it's like to be hospitalized, again and again. Now, the 2nd grader is determined to help other sick children.
Michah first went to the hospital when he was six weeks old. He was born with a blood vessel disorder that affected his left hand.
"My fingers were webbed and they were together so I couldn't really move them and so they un-webbed them and so I can actually move them," he said.
There were many trips to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and two surgeries.
Now, Micah is a seven year old who is just fine with his left hand being different.
"Now he's just kind of embraced it," said Micah's mother, Angela Pinson. "Every child has some difference so the Lord's just kind of helped him get through that and it's never been an issue for him."
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital doesn't charge patients for services. It's supported by private donations.
"They've been doing so much for us," Micah said. "It was just a blessing and there's so many kids that are just really in pain or something like that, so we're just trying to give back to the hospital, trying to make them feel better."
With help from his parents, Micah set out to collect something the hospital needs - toys for the children who are there year round.
To help with the effort, Lowes donated boxes and Costco supplied gift-wrap. Even local high school students pitched in to help. A long list of other businesses donated time, money and materials.
"We were definitely in a season of taking from the hospital and we took everything that the hospital had,' explained Micah's father, Richard Pinson. "We took the surgeries. We took the doctor appointments. We took the hand camps. We took the rehab."
With the help of many generous donors, Micah and his family are giving back.
The young boy said simply, "[It's] kind of my Christmas now, to give back."
The Pinson's walked into Scottish Rite seven years ago very fearful about their son's hand. Today they walk away knowing their son has learned the value of compassion.
The staff at Scottish Rite didn't exactly know what Micah and his parents were doing. They knew the boy was trying to get toys for children, but was unaware he'd collected more than a thousand toys -- and people are still giving.
Micah still has toy collection boxes at a number of businesses and police departments in Carrollton and Farmers Branch.
