High Speed Chase Through Fort Worth Ends In Standoff

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Fort Worth police and state troopers were involved in a high-speed chase that turned into a standoff.

The red Dodge Avenger's pursuit started on the southwest side of downtown Fort Worth, at times reaching speeds of more than 100 miles an hour.

The driver, Juan Castillo, 25, was relentless, leading police through the stockyards and surrounding neighborhoods at various speeds. He had a couple warrants out for his arrest, police said.

Castillo would slow down as squad cars circled his car, then he would somehow slip through and take off again. He even blew out a tire.

Eventually the chase ended at Jacksboro Highway just under West Loop 820 with guns drawn as police waited for the driver to exit his car.

All lanes were closed as the incident unfolded.

Police waited, and waited... and waited some more. Castillo put both hands so police could see them, but still refused to get out of the car.

"His hands were out the window. While we could see those hands that doesn't mean he can't reach inside that vehicle. The officers did say he was reaching around heavily during the pursuit, so we wanted to make sure, again, overabundance of caution, make sure it was done safely," explained Fort Worth police Sgt. Chris Britt.

Forty-five minutes later, Castillo propped his foot up on the window.

At least 15 squad cars were on-scene.

After waiting more than 30 minutes, SWAT was called. An hour later Castillo, wearing a red hoodie and sweatpants, surrendered peacefully. A trooper's car was banged up in the pursuit but nobody was hurt.
