CARROLLTON (CBS11) - Police in Carrollton are warning people who sell online to be aware of a man officers believe is responsible for a string of cell phone thefts.
Investigators said they think the same man is responsible for the thefts of four cell phones in two weeks. They say the man targets people who are selling phones on websites like Craigslist.
"He looked over the phone for another two minutes and just took off running," said Janee, the most recent victim who does not want to use her last name. "I was in complete shock that he actually did that. I kind of had faith in humanity and didn't think he'd just take off like that."
Janee posted her Samsung Galaxy S6 on mobile market place "5Miles," which is similar to sites like Craigslist.
A man named "Ray John" became interested and the two met outside a Carrollton apartment complex office.
"I just didn't think about it. I should have trusted my instinct and gone with my gut that he seemed kind of sketchy," said Janee.
After deliberating about buying the phone for 30 minutes, the suspect grabbed it and took off down the road. What the thief might not have realized, Janee's friend Kenzie was recording from her phone in the passenger seat.
"I had a feeling that something was going to happen and at that moment, I didn't get a chance to tell her," said Kenzie.
Carrollton Police now have a face to put to at least three other similar crimes.
Investigators urge anyone to use the police department when exchanging any merchandise that has been sold online.
