Bush Library & Museum Opens To The Public
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum is set to open to the public following a brief ceremony.
The building opens for visitors on Wednesday. The library and museum, along with the 43rd president's policy institute, are housed in the George W. Bush Presidential Center. The center was dedicated last week in a ceremony featuring comments from Bush and President Barack Obama, along with former Presidents Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter and Bush's father, George H.W. Bush.
Tickets to the museum cost $16 or less. "We are so excited to have the general public finally have the opportunity to come in and see this incredible facility," said Emily Robison, deputy director for the center.
Library and museum spokesman John Orrell said that 43 students from the DFW area were chosen by their superintendents to be the first visitors to the museum. "Every hour, we can handle 300 ticketed folks," Orrell explained. "They can go online, they can reserve their tickets -- 300 of those per hour. And then we have 50 tickets available per hour for any walk-up customers."
The museum includes exhibits on the 9/11 terrorist attacks and other historical events. There is also a replica of the Oval Office.
"In addition to having this great museum, we are a research institution," said library director Alan Lowe. "We're opening the research room. We'll have around 200,000 pages open, in whole or in part, for researchers to come and start exploring." Orrell added that the center has 16 archivists to help researchers make their way through the information.
