Bus Stop Rape Suspect May Be Linked To Murder
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Opening his apartment door last weekend, 26-year-old Kerrick Butler was greeted with gunfire. The father of four fell to the ground and died, while police say his 2-year-old daughter was inside the apartment, just feet away from him.
"It's hard because they took someone so precious from me," said his older sister, Eunique Moore.
Butler's family had gathered Saturday afternoon, after his funeral, when a CBS 11 News crew broke the news of a lead on a possible suspect. "Thank you, Jesus. That's all I can say. Thank you," said Moore.
Nearly five miles from Butler's apartment, police had been investigating the rapes of two women in just over a week. Officers believe that the same man attacked both, as they walked to a DART bus stop on the corner of Audelia Road and Walnut Street in northeast Dallas.
According to a police affidavit, a witness approached officers on Friday, pointing to 21-year-old Marquis White as Butler's shooter. The witness also claimed that White had told his mother he had "raped a white girl."
The affidavit says that police successfully matched White's fingerprint to one left behind on one of the rape victim's belongings. That same victim reportedly picked White out of a lineup. Police arrested White on Friday afternoon, charging him with one count of aggravated sexual assault.
Investigators have not officially named White as a suspect in any other cases, but they say they are still showing photo lineups.
Butler's family, meanwhile, is hopeful that they may soon learn who murdered him. "We're just happy to see something's being done about it," said his cousin, LaToya Brooks.
