Burned Out Apartment Complex Untouched After 3 Months
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - More than three months ago fire destroyed part of a southeast Dallas apartment complex, leaving an eyesore that does not look much different today.
It was April 12th when a four alarm fire destroyed 36 units in two buildings at the Mayan Palms apartments in the Buckner Terrace neighborhood, but the mess remains.
CBS 11 News asked the city code compliance department why the rubble is still there. There has been no reply.
Residents say the city dropped the ball.
"This is a reflection of our neighborhood," said Darlene Reynolds from the Buckner Terrace Neighborhood Association.
Neighbors say they're growing tired of the big pile of debris and two burned out buildings.
"It makes me so unbelievably sad to see all of this destruction. It's been here for so long and nothing's happened," said Reynolds.
JB Bass is a resident of the Mayan Palms. He escaped the fire without injury, but his view of the damage won't let him forget that night.
"Oh, it was pretty scary because the fire was jumping, it was just whirling," said Bass. "It should have been cleaned up already, that's what I think."
Mike Matysik is the co-owner of the apartment complex. "We apologize to the community and the homeowners for the delay. We certainly understand."
Matysik accepts some responsibility for the delay. "We have to take some responsibility for that, but our insurance company was the one who said wait, we need to assess the damage."
Reynolds says the city code compliance department finally met with neighbors this week. "They said they didn't know why they didn't give the apartment owner the 30 day notice right after the fire happened, but they were trying to work with the complex."
