Burglary Suspect Killed After Running Onto Highway
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A burglary suspect was struck and killed by a car after darting onto Interstate-35E while fleeing police at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday night, according to Dallas Police Department spokeswoman Melinda Guitierrez.
Police in Farmers Branch were chasing after four burglary suspects. According to investigators, the men were witnessed leaving the scene in a green van. A police squad car was able to get behind the van, heading southbound on the highway, in heavy traffic. That is when, police said, all four of the suspects jumped out of the van to start fleeing on foot.
The van driver ran along the highway's center retaining wall for about 25 feet before jumping over the wall. He was immediately struck by a vehicle in the northbound lanes and killed. Two of the other suspects are now in police custody. The fourth suspect managed to escape and is still at large.
After the man was struck, police closed Interstate-35E in both directions. Traffic has since returned to normal.
The identities of the suspects have not been released.
Inside the van, police said that they found items specific to the business that was burglarized. Authorities are crediting an alert witness for playing a key role in locating the suspects. "We were extremely lucky, in that we can't say enough, the effort of the person to witness it," said Sgt. Chad Taylor with the Farmers Branch Police Department, "to have the ability to contact us, to relay the information, otherwise we wouldn't have caught these people."
