Burgess Holds Town Hall Meeting In Denton
DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - People from the 26th congressional district – which includes parts of Denton, Keller, Fort Worth and Flower Mound – took their concerns straight to their congressman on Tuesday night. Rep. Michael Burgess held a town hall meeting at Denton High School.
And despite the record-breaking heat felt outside on Tuesday, the debate at this meeting might have been even hotter. More than a dozen unhappy Democrats were waiting to talk to the Republican representative from Denton.
The protesters carried signs, upset with the turbulent economic times that the nation now faces. "We need to put Americans back to work, not other countries back to work," said Phyllis Wolper. "We need jobs in this country now!"
One of those protesters came carrying a pitchfork. "When the government quits listening, it's time to go back to the pitchforks," said Neil Durrance, outside of the auditorium. "They are destroying the American dream."
Once the people moved into the auditorium, there was a long line for questions, answers and commentary – mostly all of it directed at Burgess. It was a mixed political crowd, but the representative addressed every last citizen.
"We do have a debt and income problem," said one woman.
A man added, "Never heard Congress say that they would cut their pay, cut their benefits and cut their support system. So, they were sharing their pain with the American people."
"My big thing, of course, for the last four years, has been the illegal issue."
"Why did you tell the Tea Party we need to impeach Obama?"
And after everyone had spoken, Burgess suggested that legislators get back to work, to figure out how to get Americans back to work as well. "We need the jobs to re-establish the economy," he said.
While not everyone agreed with the things that Burgess said, or with each other, they did all have a chance to express their opinions and speak their minds.
