Breathing New Life Into Historic Theater
The Texas Theatre was showing the movie "War is Hell" when Lee Harvey Oswald ran inside -- without buying a ticket. Today, there are new plans for the Texas Theatre on Jefferson Boulevard. A group of local filmmakers will use the big screen to show "indie" films and perhaps a first-run movie from time to time.
Aviation Cinemas has leased the theater from the Oak Cliff Foundation, and the deal will allow restoration work on the building. A 40-foot-wide screen will be installed, and it will be movable, so the stage can be used for concerts and plays.
The Texas Theatre is set to re-open September 30th with the airing of "Return to Giant," a documentary about the making of the Rock Hudson film.
