Breastfeeding "Nurse-In" Protest After Magazine Comments

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - An open letter about breastfeeding led to a debate and nurse-in protest outside the offices of one magazine.

There have been a lot of protesting emails and letters sent to Fort Worth Magazine since a letter and response about breastfeeding was published in their "For What It's Worth" column.

A reader wrote in describing how distracted she was when a woman at her church breastfed her baby during part of the pastor's sermon. The reader asked about "proper church etiquette" during worship.

Columnist Molly Forthright's response began with the word "Ick." She then went on to say that, "…putting on a show in the house of the Lord is unacceptable in my book."

There has been an outcry since the column was published in the March issue and today a rally was held in front of the offices of Fort Worth Magazine. Mothers, fathers, and other breastfeeding supporters attended the so-called "nurse-in".

The protestors said they feel as if Forthright's published response presented "a damaging cultural perspective that discourages women to exercise their right to nourish their child however and wherever they choose."

The group said they hope their protest helps change some of the negative perceptions often associated with breastfeeding.
