MINERAL WELLS (CBSDFW.COM) – Two days after a 9-year-old boy struggled to keep his head above water while floating in a well, he had a chance to say thank you to the stranger who saved his life.

Jaxon Tune was doing pull-ups on the bar above the well, when somehow he fell into it.

Chris Hicks, a stranger who was moving into Jaxon's Mineral Wells community on that very day, heard the child's panicked screams and jumped into the 30-foot well to save him.

"He clung onto me. Bear hugging me," said Hicks. "He kept asking where he was…what was going on."

The two waited together until a Mineral Wells police officer arrived and joined them in the well. One by one, they all made it out safely.

"I don't consider myself a hero or anything like that," said Hicks. "I'd do it again in a heartbeat."

Jaxon's mother had the chance to meet Hicks for the first time on Monday, two days after the rescue. She called him both a hero and an angel.

"I'm Teresa, I got to give you a hug," she said as she greeted Hicks.

Jaxon has a skull fracture and had to have surgery to relieve pressure to his brain. He spent two days at Cook Children's hospital, but has now been released.

"I feel great 'cuz I get to go home. Sleep in my own bed again," he said.

Jaxon will be taking it easy for a while, but plans to pay a visit to the police department to say thank you.
