Bounce House Trash Leaves Personal Customer Info Floating
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - One man's trash could be an identity thief's treasure.
That's why Kenneth Bledsoe of South Arlington says he was so upset when he found old party invitations and receipts all over his front yard this morning.
He says the garbage blew over from Pump It Up, a business for children's birthday parties across the street.
Bledsoe says they included one family's personal information.
"The customer, their daughter's name, their address, their email address, their daughter's birthday."
Bledsoe says because the customer's phone number was on the receipt, he called the woman first thing in the morning.
That customer is Samantha Pena, who says when she received the the call, "I was shocked, I was appalled. I didn't know who the gentleman was. That's scary in its own self. To think he has my information is scary, but who else has it? Who else's information is getting blown around the neighborhood."
The Texas legislature passed an ID theft law ten years ago requiring businesses to shred or erase customers' sensitive personal information.
It may be difficult to know if Pump It Up violated the law.
But the owner, Joy Narciso, tells me she's very protective of her customers' information, and says she's never heard of this happening before.
Narciso says she will make sure her customer's information is properly stored and disposed of.
Pena says they had planned to hold her daughter's birthday party here later this month, but now aren't sure if they will.
Pena says she appreciates the owner's apology, but can't help but wonder. "Even if it hadn't been blown away somewhere, someone could have gone dumpster diving and gotten that information. It's scary."
She says the owner did offer to fully refund her deposit.
Homeowners here tell me trash blowing from Pump It Up has been a problem for years.
Narciso says she didn't realize this was a problem, and will make sure that doesn't happen.
